Paying with Buy Goods and Paybill
Paying a Buy Goods till is free for you; the merchant pays. Paybill payments depend on the business: many billers cover the charge, some pass it on to you. The confirmation SMS always shows the “Transaction cost”.
Ways to pay less
One larger transfer usually costs less than several small ones: sending KES 1,000 once costs 13, but KES 500 twice costs 14.
Amounts up to KES 100 are free to send.
Pay merchants by till number instead of sending to their phone.
Withdraw less often: an agent charges KES 29 for anything from 101 to 2,500.
These are Safaricom’s published customer tariffs as of October 2026. Safaricom changes them from time to time; the confirmation SMS always shows what you were charged.
